Project:

DED Process and Properties for Grade 91 Steel

Group:

Nuclear Materials with Peter Hosemann

Description:

The research aims to understand the relationship between the manufacturing process, microstructure, and mechanical properties of grade 91 ferritic/martensitic steel produced via the Directed Energy Deposition Laser technique. The study involved testing miniature-sized samples through various mechanical tests and microstructure characterization methods. The results showed that the microstructure consisted mainly of martensite grains with some δ-phase, and the observed metallurgical pores decreased with increasing distance from the cold build platform due to changes in phase composition and dislocation density.

Project:

Machine Learning Driven Design and Additive Manufacturing of Lattice Structures for Energy Absorption

Group:

Gu Research Group

Description:

This research project explores the optimization of lattice structures using a deep learning approach and high-order Bézier curves. The optimized designs outperformed benchmark designs in terms of modulus and strength by shifting material towards the joint region and balancing axial and bending deformation. The use of high-order Bézier curves allowed for a smoother transition between beam elements, reducing overall stress concentration profiles.
